Our Mission:
The Mission of Defending Holy Matrimony is to restore authority over Catholic marriage to the Catholic Church.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Arcanum (on Christian Marriage, 1880), Pope Leo XIII asserts, "Neither, . . . can it be shown . . . that power over the marriages of Christians has ever lawfully been handed over to the rulers of the State." Further, ". . . in Christian marriage the contract is inseparable from the sacrament."
More recently, Pope John Paul II in his speech to the Roman Rota on January 28, 2002, reminds us that, "Marriage is indissoluble." In this same speech, Our Holy Father urged, "Among initiatives should be those that aim at obtaining the public recognition of indissoluble marriage in the civil juridical order."
In January, 2003 the "Doctrinal Note on some questions regarding the participation of Catholics in political life" was published by The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which states:
"...the family needs to be safeguarded and promoted, based on monogamous marriage between a man and a woman, and protected in its unity and stability in the face of modern laws on divorce..."
The Mission of Defending Holy Matrimony is to heed the words of our beloved Pope John Paul II to create an "initiative" that will render the "public recognition of indissoluble marriage in the civil juridical order."
In order for there to be "public recognition of indissoluble marriage in the civil juridical order," the civil courts must publicly recognize that they have no power over our indissoluble Catholic marriages. In order for marriage to be publicly recognized as being indissoluble, the courts must be required to take a hands-off approach when dealing with Catholic marriages.
Pope Leo XIII clearly states in Arcanum that the secular divorce courts have no authority over Christian marriages. Civil courts cannot be allowed to continue separating the contract from the sacrament to proceed with a civil divorce as is done presently. Our Catholic marriages must be restored to the hands of the Church. Control must be relinquished by civil authority.
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into Hell, Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen
